Jebel Zalagh stands directly behind Fez and is visible from nearly every rooftop terrace in the medina, yet the drive to its foot takes barely half an hour. The walk climbs through olive groves, smallholdings and Berber hamlets to a summit that opens onto the whole city, the Sebou valley, the Sais plain and the Rif ranges beyond. Lunch is a home-cooked meal in a village house on the way back down.
The drive leaves the city behind quickly, running out through olive groves and past traditional Berber farms toward the foot of the mountain.
Duration: 30 minutes
The ascent starts gently across open countryside, threading between small villages and worked fields. It is an easy first stretch and a natural window into how the land around Fez is farmed.
The path steepens near the top without ever becoming difficult. The reward is a clean 360-degree sweep taking in Fez below, the Sebou valley, the Sais plain and the Rif Mountains on the horizon.
Duration: 30 minutes – 1 hour
A rural home lays on a Berber meal of homemade bread, tagine, olives, cheese and seasonal fruit. The money goes straight to the families who live on the mountain.
The descent rejoins the vehicle for the short drive back, with drop-off at your hotel or at the edge of the medina.
