Chefchaouen sits two and a half hours south of Tangier, high in the Rif, and this full day gives it the time it deserves. Founded in 1471 by Andalusian exiles, the town is a maze of blue-washed walls, stepped alleys and small squares, with an old kasbah at its centre that now shelters a walled garden. Guests walk the medina with a guide, browse souks stacked with handwoven textiles and pottery, and take in the mountain views before the drive back to the coast.
The road climbs south out of Tangier into the Rif, through cork oak and olive country, with the blue town appearing on the hillside near the end.
Duration: 2.5 hours
A guided walk through the indigo lanes, past the ancient kasbah whose fortress walls now enclose a shaded garden, and into souks selling handwoven textiles and pottery.
The town's central square, where Arab and Spanish influences meet in the surrounding architecture and the cafés spill out under the kasbah walls.
A 15th-century building distinguished by its octagonal minaret, an unusual form in Morocco.
Where the mountain stream enters the town, a gathering place of running water, old mill wheels and cafés set into the rock.
